Imagine you are at the beach. It is 32\u00b0C, you have just finished swimming, and you want a cold bottle of water or a soft drink. Instead of looking for the nearest kiosk or shop, you open an app on your phone and order a product.<\/p>\n
A few minutes later, a vending machine comes to you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Not a traditional vending machine fixed in one location, but a small autonomous robot that can move independently, locate the customer, and deliver the ordered product.<\/p>\n It may sound like a scene from a science-fiction film, but the idea of autonomous mobile vending is already being explored. As early as 2016, researchers from the University of Lisbon were developing a concept for an autonomous mobile vending robot designed to distribute food and drinks on beaches. The aim of the research was to explore how users would respond to such a concept and what would be required for its future implementation.<\/p>\n Today, with advances in artificial intelligence, computer vision, sensors, and autonomous navigation, the idea is becoming even more interesting.<\/p>\n Traditional vending works according to a simple principle:<\/p>\n customer approaches the machine \u2192 selects a product \u2192 pays \u2192 collects the product<\/strong><\/p>\n With autonomous vending, this concept could be reversed:<\/p>\n customer orders a product \u2192 vending robot comes to the customer \u2192 customer collects the product<\/strong><\/p>\n This could completely change the way we think about vending machine locations.<\/p>\n Today, one of the most important factors in the vending business is finding a good location. The more people pass by a machine, the greater its sales potential.<\/p>\n Autonomous vending could change that principle.<\/p>\n Instead of waiting for customers to walk past it, the machine could actively go to the customer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n That opens up an enormous number of possibilities.<\/p>\n Beaches, festivals, major sporting events, campuses, trade fairs, airports, large business complexes, and tourist areas are just some of the locations where such a concept could make sense.<\/p>\n The most interesting part of this concept is not vending itself, but autonomous movement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The robot would need to understand the environment around it.<\/p>\n Various sensors, cameras, GPS, lidar, and artificial intelligence systems could be used for this purpose.<\/p>\n A camera could recognise people and obstacles, while lidar could create a type of 3D map of the surroundings. AI could then determine the best route to the customer.<\/p>\n The robot would need to know:<\/p>\n This is a much more complex challenge than the one faced by a traditional vending machine.<\/p>\n Interestingly, similar technology is already being researched in other areas of retail. For example, researchers are developing autonomous robots that use computer vision to move independently through stores and identify empty shelves. One such system developed in 2026 achieved a 93% navigation success rate in retail environments.<\/p>\n In other words, the technology required for a robot to \u201csee\u201d its surroundings and move independently is already developing rapidly.<\/p>\n The next step could be applying it to vending.<\/p>\n One possible future scenario could look like this.<\/p>\n The customer opens an app and sees:<\/p>\n \u201cThe nearest vending robot is 85 metres away.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n They select:<\/p>\n They pay through the app and confirm their location.<\/p>\n The robot receives the order.<\/p>\n The system calculates the shortest safe route and the robot starts moving towards the customer.<\/p>\n Once it arrives, the customer confirms collection through their smartphone or another form of identification.<\/p>\n The robot opens the appropriate compartment and the customer collects the product.<\/p>\n The entire process could take just a few minutes.<\/p>\n In this model, vending is no longer simply automated retail<\/strong>. It becomes a combination of vending, robotics, and delivery.<\/p>\n If we consider where this concept could make the most sense, beaches are one of the most interesting examples.<\/p>\n People at the beach often do not want to get up, gather their belongings, and walk several hundred metres to a kiosk simply to buy a bottle of water.<\/p>\n An autonomous vending robot could move within a designated area and enable customers to purchase products directly where they are.<\/p>\n The same concept could also be used at:<\/p>\n Of course, real-world implementation would require solving a number of challenges, ranging from safety and regulation to battery life and product protection.<\/p>\n This is precisely why concepts like these have not yet become a standard part of the vending industry.<\/p>\n This is one of those problems that may appear simple at first, but is actually crucial.<\/p>\n An autonomous vending robot would not use energy only to keep products refrigerated.<\/p>\n It would also need power for:<\/p>\n Battery autonomy would therefore be one of the key factors.<\/p>\n In the future, networks of autonomous charging stations<\/strong> could be developed where robots could recharge themselves.<\/p>\n An even more interesting concept would be for the robot to decide for itself when it needs to recharge.<\/p>\n For example, if AI predicts a high number of orders over the next two hours, the robot would not go to a charging station if it still had enough power to complete them.<\/p>\n If it predicts low demand, it could use that time to recharge.<\/p>\n Energy management itself could therefore become automated.<\/p>\n Another interesting challenge researchers are exploring is product recognition using computer vision<\/strong>.<\/p>\n In smart vending systems, the aim is for cameras to recognise which product a customer has taken, without requiring every product to carry an RFID tag.<\/p>\n Research already shows that computer vision and deep-learning models can recognise products inside vending machines.<\/p>\n But the future could go even further.<\/p>\n A robot could have a camera capable of detecting:<\/p>\n \u201cThe customer took a Coca-Cola, but the system registered water.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n AI could then automatically verify the transaction before payment is processed.<\/p>\n This is particularly important for smart coolers and fully open retail systems where customers take products themselves.<\/p>\n Research from 2026 is already exploring more efficient purchase-recognition systems for unmanned vending environments, including systems that use only two cameras and track the movement of the customer\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n This may be even more interesting.<\/p>\n The future of vending may not be limited to machines selling ready-made products.<\/p>\n What if the machine could actually prepare the product after it was ordered?<\/p>\n For example:<\/p>\n Such concepts are already being researched, but the greatest challenge is not the food-preparation technology itself.<\/p>\n The challenge is food safety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n If a machine prepares food independently, it must ensure hygiene, correct temperatures, proper cleaning, and control of microbiological risks.<\/p>\n Research into automated vending systems for smoothie preparation is already examining ways to automate cleaning and maintain hygienic conditions.<\/p>\n The vending machine of the future could therefore look completely different: instead of purchasing a product that is already inside the machine, the machine could prepare it after the customer places an order<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Another technology that is particularly interesting at the moment is the automatic assessment of food freshness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Imagine a refrigerated unit containing sandwiches, salads, and other fresh products.<\/p>\n Instead of simply monitoring expiration dates, sensors could track temperature, humidity, and certain gases associated with food spoilage.<\/p>\n Research is already combining IoT sensors and machine learning to enable systems to classify product freshness in real time.<\/p>\n In the future, a vending system could determine:<\/p>\n \u201cThis product is still perfectly fresh.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n or:<\/p>\n \u201cThis product should be sold before the others.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n This could significantly reduce food waste.<\/p>\n Even more interestingly, the system could automatically adjust the price.<\/p>\n For example:<\/p>\n expiration date approaching \u2192 discount automatically activated<\/strong><\/p>\n This would combine artificial intelligence, food safety, dynamic pricing, and sustainability.<\/p>\n This may be one of the most interesting ideas for operators.<\/p>\n Imagine a vending network consisting of 500 machines.<\/p>\n Today, an operator has to monitor sales, inventory, restocking, maintenance, and routes.<\/p>\n In the future, AI could manage a large part of this process independently.<\/p>\n The system could report:<\/p>\n \u201cMachine 127 has run out of water.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cMachine 83 will run out of protein bars in 14 hours.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cMachine 212 has unusually low sales.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cDemand for cold drinks is expected to be 27% higher tomorrow due to the weather forecast.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n And then take it one step further:<\/p>\n \u201cI recommend restocking Machine 127 with 80 bottles of water, 30 energy drinks, and 20 iced teas.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n A more advanced system could even automatically generate an order for the supplier.<\/p>\n This means that one day, an entire vending network could have its own AI-powered operational brain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Perhaps this is the most interesting part.<\/p>\n The future of vending may not be defined by one revolutionary machine.<\/p>\n The greatest innovation may actually be connecting everything<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The machine.<\/p>\n The robot.<\/p>\n The app.<\/p>\n AI.<\/p>\n Sensors.<\/p>\n Payments.<\/p>\n Logistics.<\/p>\n Maintenance.<\/p>\n Suppliers.<\/p>\n Everything could be connected within a single system.<\/p>\n At that point, a vending operator would no longer simply manage machines.<\/p>\n They would manage an autonomous retail network<\/strong>.<\/p>\n And that is where vending begins to move towards an entirely new industry: autonomous retail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Vending began with a very simple idea:<\/p>\n put a product inside a machine and allow the customer to buy it without a salesperson<\/strong><\/p>\n The next stage introduced cards and digital payments.<\/p>\n Then came IoT, telemetry, and connected devices.<\/p>\n Today, computer vision, AI, smart coolers, autonomous navigation, and robotic systems are developing rapidly. Research already shows how these technologies can be combined with vending, although many of the most ambitious ideas are still at the prototype, research, or limited-testing stage.<\/p>\n The vending machine of the future may therefore look completely different from the machines we know today.<\/p>\n Customers will no longer have to find a vending machine.<\/p>\n The vending machine will find the customer.<\/strong><\/p>\n It will not simply sell a ready-made product.<\/p>\n It may prepare the product itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n It will not simply monitor inventory levels.<\/p>\n It will predict what is going to sell.<\/strong><\/p>\n It will not simply wait for something to break down.<\/p>\n It will predict when a failure is likely to occur.<\/strong><\/p>\n And perhaps that is where the greatest potential of the vending industry lies: not in creating a smarter vending machine, but in transforming vending into a fully autonomous retail system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Imagine you are at the beach.
